Generation 2

Congratulations!

You are now the caretaker for a genuine Tamagotchi. Tamagotchi is a cyber creature who has travelled millions of miles from its home planet to learn what life is like on Earth. Let me explain how to care for your Tamagotchi.

Hover over them!
Feed

If you see their Hunger bar emptying in the Health Meter, you'll have to give them meals. But be careful not to overfeed them; if you do, they'll refuse to eat.

Snacks are also tempting. They'll raise your Tamagotchi's happiness, but be careful or they'll get sick!

Light

If you see your Tamagotchi inside their bed, it's time for you to turn the light off for them. Don't worry about turning it on again in the morning; they can do that by themselves.

Different species have different schedules, so make sure you don't ignore their call as sleep is very important for their health.

Play

If you see their Happiness bar emptying in the Health Meter, you'll have to Play with them. Try to guess if the number they show on the left will be higher than the one on the right. If you get it right at least 3/5 rounds, their happiness will increase.

Playing is also a great way to keep your Tamagotchi at a healthy weight, especially if they've been eating one too many snacks!

Medicine

Sometimes your Tamagotchi will get sick. When this happens, a skull will appear next to them. Give them as much medicine as they need to cure them (sometimes it'll take 2-3 injections).

When they fall sick, they won't call for your attention, so make sure you check them regularly.

Duck

Just like real pets, Tamagotchi will poop every now and then. When this happens, use the duck to clean up the mess. Make sure to check them regularly, as they won't call for your attention. If you don't clean it soon, they'll fall sick.

Health Meter

This menu will translate your Tamagotchi's needs into human units and language. Every human day is equivalent to a year for them. If you manage to get them above 23 years you will have done an excellent job, congratulations!

The Hunger and Happiness bars will tell you if you need to feed or play with your Tamagotchi. And the Discipline bar will show how well behaved they are.

As for their weight, each species has an ideal value. Make sure to keep your Tamagotchi at that weight to prevent them from getting sick.

Discipline

Sometimes your Tamagotchi will misbehave. This can take the form of them calling for your attention even though their Hunger and Happiness bars aren't empty. Other times, they might refuse to eat or play even though the bar is empty.

Either way, in this case you will have to discipline them so they grow into a well-mannered adultchi.

Attention

Whenever your Tamagotchi needs your help, they'll beep to get your attention. This icon will also be highlighted in case you didn't hear them, so make sure to check it regularly. It will turn off once their needs are met or if you ignore it for 15 min.

Care

You see that egg-shaped device up there? At first sight it might look like a simple keychain but, in truth, it's a high-tech device designed by professor Banzo and called "Tamagotchi HOUSE". In this first section of the page, we're going to focus on taking care of these wonderful beings but, if you want to know more about them, feel free to check the other tabs as well!

So you want to raise a healthy Tamagotchi, don't you? Well, if you have one of the devices above, you'll be able to communicate with them, so the hardest part is solved, phew! First, you'll have to set its clock to Earth's time. Upon doing so, it'll present you with an egg that will hatch within minutes.

As soon as it hatches, your Tamagotchi will cry for your Attention and, depending on how well you care for them, their health and behavior will be exemplar (or not!). The Health Meter will translate your tamas' needs into a language you can understand so you know what to do at all times. It'll even parse its age and weight to the human measurement systems!

If his Hunger meter goes down, you'll have to Feed them. And for their Happiness meter, you'll have to Play with them. Or give them candy. But be careful to not give them too many or their health will weaken.

Do their call for your Attention for no reason? Or refuse to eat and play even though their Hunger and Happiness meters are empty? Then you are looking at a case of bad behavior. Make sure to Discipline them as needed when that happens, or else they'll grow into an ill-mannered adultchi!

Let's also not forget that, just like you and I they have to...alleviate themselves. Trapped in their little house, they'll do it right there and you'll see a poop next to them. When that happens, the Duck will take care of cleaning their room. Make sure to check them frequently to ensure everything's clean or they'll fall sick.

Last but not least, we all need to sleep too. Their schedule varies depending on the species but, whenever they want to go to bed, they'll call for your Attention. Just turn the Light off to make sure they rest well so they remain healthy. Don't worry about it in the morning, they can turn it on again by themselves.

If you keep all that in mind, you'll be set on the right path to raise a good and healty Tamagotchi! But don't worry, we all make mistakes and, sometimes, your tama will get sick. If that happens, make sure to give them as much Medicine as they need to get that sinister skull out of their house!

If you want to see more details, hover over the different tags in the device image above to check each of them. Otherwise, I'll recommend you check their lore if you want to know how they used to live in their homeworld.

Tamagotchi Planet

In our previous entry dedicated to the first generation of Tamagotchi HOUSES, we explained what they were and how they got to our planet. But where did they come from? Well, Banzo and Mikachu asked themselves the same question...and it took them to the Tamagotchi Planet!

We already introduced the planet briefly and mentioned he was a living, sentient being, just like everything else within it. In particular, he is what is known as a Gaiatchi, but we'll discuss those in a separate page.

The Tamagotchi Planet, at first, seems to be covered mainly by water, much like Earth. However, upon closer inspection, it seems that's not the case. It turns out that, at least for some oceans, the composition is actually a mixture of various juices and cocktails. Perhaps this is what makes the planet look greenish when seen from space?

Scattered across his oceans, there are several continents and islands. During his first expedition, Banzo only mentioned some locations without detailing them. I suspect this might have been information he heard from different Tamagotchis, which would explain the later changes in names and maps. Either that, or the planet simply moves them around. It wouldn't be entirely impossible considering he can dream new islands into existence and that every natural element is a Gaiatchi as well!

In any case, here are some interesting regions both for the species we have already introduced up to this point as well as others that came to our world soon after their first trip:

Tamagotchi Town

This is the main settlement on the planet and the place chosen by Banzo for his first expedition! Lots of different Tamagotchi species live here, and the town is surrounded by multiple smaller settlements as well.

Gotchi King's Castle

Located within Tamagotchi Town, this remarkable building is the residence of Gotchi King and his family, rulers of the entire race.

Tenshitchi Capital

Home to all the Tenshitchi species, it lies within the Sky Country, in the clouds surrounding the planet. It appears to serve as a sort of afterlife for Tamagotchi.

The Tenshitchi

When a Tamagotchi dies, an Obaketchi appears. The Tenshitchi are born when this spirit evolves into a Ghost Jr. On Earth, they can appear inside the Tamagotchi Angel devices.

Mushitchi Forest

Possibly located in Bug Island or even being the same location altogether, this is the main home to all Mushitchi species.

The Mushitchi

These insect-like Tamagotchi can live anywhere, but usually they prefer to stay in the forest. This is due to their small size, which makes them vulnerable to accidentally being stepped on. On Earth, they can appear inside the Tamagotchi Morino devices.

Sakanatchi Sea

Also known as the Tamagotchi Sea, it's composed of the same mixture mentioned before instead of water. There are three islands located in it: Bug Island, Summer Winter Island and Resort Island. This sea is also known to be a rather popular destination for surfing.

The Sakanatchi

Comprised of fish-like Tamagotchi, they're all born and raised in this sea, but can be found throughout the planet. On Earth, they can appear inside the Tamagotchi Umino devices.

Zetsuenshi Island

Within this island there is a mountain from which the pull tab of the Tamagotchi Planet sticks out. It's so large that it can be seen from space! If pulled out, the planet will start moving, which is what happened when Oyajitchi got him drunk back in the day; the planet pulled out his own tab and used it as a microphone to start singing, sending the Tamagotchi fleeing to Earth.

The back of the planet has a screen-like patch of land with three button-shaped islands below. Would it turn on? Hmm...

As the years passed, new locations were discovered and corrections were made in some of the ones already marked in the original map. Too many for this page, in fact. I plan to study the planet's geography in greater detail and create a better map in the future. For now, this will be enough to understand their origins before diving into their lifestyle!

City Life

The Tamagotchi inhabit different cities and villages scattered all over their planet. During their first expedition, Banzo and Mikachu visited the largest of them: Tamagotchi Town.

Here they conducted their first studies regarding their lifestyle, society and culture. The first thing they noticed was that, overall, the city organization didn't differ much from our own, with residential and commercial areas. The residential areas stood out mainly due to the much heavier use of technology. But the biggest contrast came within businesses.

Their economy doesn't seem to be based on money, or at least not entirely. Inside stores, the Tamagotchi can find rows of eggs moving along conveyor belts. Each of them has a tag attached to it which doesn't represent the price, but the value of what's inside. Whatever lies inside remains a mystery. Each customer can pick a single egg, following the rule of "first come, first served". Regardless of what they get, refunds are not allowed!

As for entertainment, they visited several places. From public baths to the world-famous Tamagotchi Land, the biggest amusement park on the planet. Interestingly, one of the places they noted as a socialization spot were waiting rooms in hospitals. Rather than going there only when sick, it seems many Tamagotchi visit simply to spend time with their friends.

A special case in their studies of this last field was the famous Oyaji Bar. Known for the great variety of drinks and snacks it offers, they heard peculiar rumor there. It is said that those who visit for a drink, soon find themselves becoming an Oyajitchi. Strange as it sounds, it's true that the place is frequented by a large number of them. An unusual coincidence... or perhaps not.

While some of their customs might look shocking to us, their way of life is, overall, surprisingly familiar. As the years went by, more locations were discovered, enough to fill an entire travel guide! Rather than detailing them here, I will cover those once I create a world map with all the regions discovered so far. Stay tuned!

Growth Details

Tamagotchi are creatures that transform as they grow up. The species they become depends on the environment they're raised in, which is why it's so important to take good care of them.

Note there are slight differences depending on the type of device you have, so make sure you're checking the one that applies to your personal Tamagotchi HOUSE. Old devices refer to those originally crafted by Banzo back in 1997. New ones refer to the ones created from 2017 onwards. Besides that, both old and new devices have two waves, which influence what species will be able to live in them.

Last but not least, some Tamagotchi species are endemic of certain regions. In this second generation, the changes in the available ones are more notable. Nyatchi and Charitchi used to be present only in Japan, but have completely disappeared from new devices. Besides those, Sekirotchi is still present in Japanese ones, replaced by Zatchi when outside of that region.

To undestand the growth paths it's also important to know what are care mistakes and discipline mistakes, as well as how they function:

  • A care mistake happens when your Tamagotchi is hungry or unhappy and they're not taken care of within 15 minutes of their call. For example, if their Hunger meter reaches zero, they'll call for you. If you don't Feed them within 15 minutes, the Attention icon will turn off and it'll be counted as a care mistake.
  • A discipline mistake happens when your Tamagotchi calls for Attention without a reason and they're not disciplined within 15 minutes of their call. For example, if their Hunger and Happiness meters still have two hearts and your Tamagotchi calls you, that'd be a case of misbehavior. Another example would be that they call for your Attention but then refuse to eat or play even if their meters are empty.
  • Care and discipline mistakes are cumulative between the child and teen stages. For example, if you made 1 discipline mistake when they were a Tonmarutchi and 0 discipline mistakes when they were a Tongaritchi, the total discipline mistakes would be 1. This means they will become a Pochitchi upon reaching adulthood.

Especially interesting in these devices are the types one/two in which teens can be divided. Even if they are the same species, the type will define the adults that they can grow into, so pay close attention to the growth path your Tamagotchi is following.

The growth paths are the result of several studies written by researchers all over the world combined with my own personal experience. This means there can be room for improvement as new discoveries are made. I will add any corrections necessary if any errors are reported.

Characters

Species: Mimitchi

Family: Mame Family

Ideal Weight: 30g

Intelligence: Level 10 or higher

Stage: Adult

Description

With an IQ of 200, they're the smartest of the bunch and great with numbers! They have a keen sense of hearing and their ears are sensitive to radio waves, but rumor has it that they're just a hat!

Author's Notes

Huh!? The ears are a hat? Depending on the source, that's what it says. My life is a lie, especially since they're my fave from this generation.

Species: Pochitchi

Family: Anima Family

Ideal Weight: 30g

Intelligence: Level 4

Stage: Adult

Description

They might look and behave like dogs, but that's just because they were raised with one when they first arrived to Earth. They're sensible to sirens and drawn to telephone poles.

Author's Notes

This little guy is how I fully discovered Gen2. Me and a friend were raising tamas 2-3 years ago. She told me she got a dog and I was SO confused because there are no dogs?? Then I realized Gen2 had different species and decided to get one lol

Species: Nyatchi

Family: Anima Family

Ideal Weight: 30g

Intelligence: Level 5

Stage: Adult

Description

They're selfish and spoiled, but know how to get everyone's affection. The color of their body changes with their mood.

Author's Notes

Kinda salty that this one never made it to other countries. Or the relaunch, for that matter. I wonder why...

Species: Zuccitchi

Family: Kabuki Family

Ideal Weight: 10g

Intelligence: Level 7

Stage: Adult

Description

Mischievous and on the hyperactive side (perhaps too much coffee?). They want to be a superhero with their special move "jump-two-meters-and-bite".

Author's Notes

Now that I read again the description, one of the illustrations in my reference book makes more sense. I prefer Maskutchi from the Gen1, but find the superhero part cute.

Species: Hashizoutchi

Family: Kuchi Family

Ideal Weight: 20g

Intelligence: Level 4

Stage: Adult

Description

They have no taste, yet they love eating Kabuki-kage. Maybe it's because they love Kabuki performances? They dream of becoming a Kabuki actor themselves.

Author's Notes

Poor guy can't compete with Kuchipatchi for me. I think it's the lips. Still, love slow boys. Also, the Kabuki obsession is cute.

Species: Kusatchi

Family: Grass Family

Ideal Weight: 20g

Intelligence: Level 3

Stage: Adult

Description

They can use photosynthesis to get nutrients, which compensates how little they can eat. They're very fashionable, changing their pot and wearing bows.

Author's Notes

Their sprite looks like a screaming plant and I love it haha The descriptions I checked were all over the place: they like metal, got athlete's foot (?), run very fast (???). It made me like them even more.

Species: Takotchi

Family: Octopus Family

Ideal Weight: 10g

Intelligence: Level 4

Stage: Adult

Description

They love hot baths, but can't tolerate cold water even if they look like an octopus. For some reason, they hate dentists, even though they have no teeth. With their head's periscope, they peek over walls.

Author's Notes

I don't have much to say, but it's interesting that they appear in the Angel Tamagotchi as a teen instead of an adult. Huh.

Species: Tongaritchi

Family: Indeterminate

Ideal Weight: 20g

Intelligence: Indeterminate

Stage: Teen

Description

Very energetic and loves gardening. Their hobby is creating flower beds and they love eating garden-grown veggies, especially corn.

Author's Notes

Aww they love gardening! Same, buddy, same. Just for that, I think this is the teen I prefer from the two (no shade to Hashitamatchi though).

Species: Hashitamatchi

Family: Indeterminate

Ideal Weight: 20g

Intelligence: Indeterminate

Stage: Teen

Description

They're not exactly early-birds, and their low blood pressure doesn't help. Lazy and with a carefree personality, they could have used a little bit more discipline.

Author's Notes

Not much to say about their look, but the low blood pressure is such and oddly specific thing for a franchise targeted at kids lol

Species: Tonmarutchi

Family: Indeterminate

Ideal Weight: 10g

Intelligence: Indeterminate

Stage: Child

Description

Similar to Marutchi but much grumpier, they love entering small and narrow spaces. For some reason, their hobby seems to be crumpling up paper...

Author's Notes

I find the animation funny but in a rather unfortunate way. Maybe I have a dirty mind, but it reminds me of something else when they jump and squish.

Species: Shirobabytchi

Family: Indeterminate

Ideal Weight: 5g

Intelligence: Indeterminate

Stage: Baby

Description

Cute but a spoiled, Shirobabytchi loves strawberry rice cakes and admires strong people. They need lots of a attention!

Author's Notes

Slightly less gooey in the animation than a Babytchi, but still enough for me to like them. Maybe they're just better at standing?

Species: Sekitoritchi

Family: Kabuki Family (mutant)

Ideal Weight: 30g

Intelligence: Level 7

Stage: Adult (stage 2)

Description

He wants to become a yokozuna, but prefers dancing over sumo training. He also prefers puddings over chankonabe. What a striking contrast between appearance and behaviour!

Author's Notes

If it weren't because of some anime I've watched, I wouldn't have understood half of the translation lol

Species: Charitchi

Family: Kabuki Family (mutant)

Ideal Weight: 30g

Intelligence: Level 5

Stage: Adult (stage 2)

Description

He's quiet, introvert and rather unopinionated. What he loves the most is driving his bike at full speed down straight roads.

Author's Notes

My guy just wants to ride into the horizon haha Also, when I tried to use a translator for his description, it gave me "he's apolitical". He's a centrist or something now.

Species: Zatchi

Family: Indeterminate

Ideal Weight: 30g

Intelligence: Indeterminate

Stage: Adult (stage 2)

Description

A big fan of science fiction, rumor has it that he's an alien even by Tamagotchi standards. Perhaps he's on a secret mission?

Author's Notes

Same friend as with the Pochitchi story: she swore she got an alien when she was a child. I asked if it could have been the death animation but no, there IS an alien, and we just had different devices. I realized it when I was looking up Pochitchi.

Anatomy

TBD. There are a couple of absurd drawings with their anatomy. I might put those besides the description.

Evolution

TBD. Not like the evolution that happens when they grow up. I mean the families (kuchi, mame, etc.), which also had a section in the book.

My Notes

And now it's time for me to drop the (slight) professor roleplay from the other tabs so I can write about my IRL experience with this second generation of Tamagotchi. Which isn't a lot (only the relaunch) but I still think it's neat.

In truth, even if it's the second, for me it's been basically the last one. At least based on when I got the device. I bought the Paradise before the Gen2 Relaunch because of a pretty good sale, but I haven't had the time to play it. Too many things going on in my life for MONTHS. And the Paradise isn't exactly small, so I couldn't go around carrying it. The result is that my last device was this Gen2 but at least I've already played it.

If you've checked my Gen1 shrine, you might have seen a paragraph that said I used to believe different Tamagotchis were also knock-offs. The main reason being that there were many copies at the time and that I didn't know there were new generations. I mean, they looked the same on the outside, the sprites weren't extremely different and they came out pretty much at the same time. Fair assumption IMO

Well, I was convinced that was the case until I discovered all the new versions, which happened thanks to the Gen2. At first I didn't know it existed, even though it was RIGHT THERE when I bought a Gen1 Relaunch device. I just saw different characters and picked the box that featured the ones I recognized from my childhood. The "Gen1" and "Gen2" labels didn't register in my head. And the store had them mixed anyways. I just wanted to play the same thing that I had as a kid without breaking my childhood Tamagotchi.

But around the same time of getting mine, a friend also got one. Not sure if it was a coincidence or if I made her nostalgic, but I guess she followed the same mental process as me: pick the box with your childhood characters. She didn't notice the generation labels either. We had been talking before about our childhood experience and she mentioned: I got an alien once! I was super confused, so I asked if it could have been the death animation, but she was convinced it wasn't and it was an alien. So I thought it might have been a rare one. After all, I once got "a dude" (Bill, probably) and never managed to raise a second one so...

Other than that, the other tamas were the same for us: one with black ears, another that had like a mask, the guy with the big lips, etc. Except she was describing Mimitchi, Zuccitchi and Hashizoutchi...and I was picturing Mametchi, Maskutchi and Kuchipatchi in my head. Pretty close but not the same.

The realization came when we both started to raise tamas in our new devices. I asked her what she got and she said: a dog! But...there are no dogs?? I asked for a picture and yep, definitely a dog. So I looked it up and saw it was called Pochitchi. And I also saw there were tons of generations that came out after mine. Which makes sense, but I had no idea lol

I don't go shopping that often (or more like, I don't pay attention). Since I also don't have social networks, it's hard to discover stuff unless you see it out there. Also, for some reason, Tamagotchis aren't that frequent in stores, at least not the ones I visit. They often have virtual pets from another couple of brands, but not this one.

Either way, that revelation pushed me into wanting to try the newer versions, and I ended up buying the Uni as my next device. I thought about asking my friend if she'd like to temporarily trade devices to check different versions, but ended up buying one myself.

Which, by the way, was a hassle. I kinda wanted the same as hers, which is super cute with the starry design, but couldn't find it in stores. There was only a black/red one, and they didn't get new stock for YEARS. I'm not kidding. I tried again and again, in different stores from different franchises...and no other colors. So I decided to buy it online, and saw there were lots of models. In the end, I liked more the Tama Picnic one, which you can see in the Care tab. It's transparent and features some of the new characters. My friend's is the Starry Shower, the one you can see in the image next to this text. The stores brought new colors recently, including mine. Feels like they were waiting for me to buy it online haha

And that's all the history I have with this generation. It might not be as long as the Gen1, but it's the reason why I rediscovered the franchise in the first place. So now I get to try new releases, not just the one I've been using for more than 20 years. Better late than never I guess!
